Cheerio from my local.

Something about Irish films - they just drip with local charm. I blame Father Ted for exposing the appeal of Irish humor to the masses, well, at least to me. This film, which features the immensely likable Louisa Harland (Claire) who you might know from the brilliant Derry Girls. The rest of the cast does a great job as well.

You can get the plot outline from the description, not really worth rehashing here. As a vampire flick and horror, this is mostly a miss. The kills are okay and there is some gore, but it doesn't gel with the's not Shaun of the Dead or even Juan of the Dead...the mix is all wrong here.

There are endless one-liners and witty dialog - it's amusing, and at times, out-right hilarious. Then a vampire scene pops up and the film tries to be a legit horror film...abandoning humor (especially in the third act), for a more traditional approach to the task at hand.

The cinematography is expert, no shaky camera or odd framing...the use of natural light is a nice touch, but at times, the scenes are much too dark...many filmed in absolute darkness.

Overall, this is a good film and worth the watch...but it struggles with identity.

Girls Not Allowed or Salem's Not...

A pretty tedious affair, script and acting as Am-dram as you'll find with a disengaging story although Sam Neil's Irish brogue is a surprise and the special defects aren't too bad.

"Lovely" Irish Undead Film

I have to say I am enjoying the Irish film industry and their treatment of horror/sci-fi. This film fits nicely into this mode. The film balances elements of seriousness, horror, comedy, and a particular sensibility that I can only assume is unique to the Irish culture. And it works nicely for me. As the government desires to have a new road put through a small village, the plans unearth an undead creature, leaving the town folk at its mercy. It's up to a small band of the construction crew to find out if they can stop the creature. Fun and engrossing film with just enough wit to keep it fun.
